Bluefin Tuna Popping Baby Porcupine Puffers

by Stanley Meltzoff

Bluefin Tuna Popping Baby Porcupine Puffers features a group of giant bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) feeding on a school of porcupine puffers (Diodon spp.). Artist Stanley Meltzoff (1917-2007) painted this iconic image in 1979. TAG has named Mr. Meltzoff as our first-ever Marine Art Fellow and is partnering with Silverfish Press to offer limited edition, signed-and-numbered giclee prints of this stunning oil-on-mounted-canvas masterpiece. These lithographs are among the last remaining signed-and-numbered prints in the Meltzoff estate.

The late Stanley Meltzoff was born in New York City in 1917, and today this American master is widely regarded as the first and still preeminent fish painter of all time. His works include more than 350 paintings of saltwater gamefish, including bonefish, bluefish, marlin, permit, rays and sharks, sailfish, snook, striped bass, swordfish, and of course tuna. His famous images have been featured in Colliers, Cosmopolitan, Field & Stream, Life, National Geographic, Redbook, Saturday Evening Post, Scientific American, Sports Illustrated and The Atlantic. Meltzoff art is currently held in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, Lee Yawkey Woodson Museum, Genesse Museum, Getty Museum of Art, National Geographic Society headquarters building, New Britain Museum of American Art, Princeton University, and numerous private collectors. Meltzoff's bluefin tuna art is highly sought after, and his "Bluefin at Ballyhoo," also painted in 1979, sold for nearly $32,000 at auction in Fall 2010.
